Based on our experience in Afghanistan, here are some places we recommend for you.

HERAT

Friday Mosque [Masjid Jaama], built by the Ghorids a thousand years ago. Sufis come here for zekker [invocation of His name] every Friday.

A hallway at the Friday Mosque

Minaret of Ghawharshad [Monar-e Ghawharshad] wife of of Shahrukh Mirza, built a garden and six minarets. Only five survived today. the road in between built by the Iranians is weakening the foundation everyday by passing traffic. UNESCO held one of the leaning minarets upright by a rope. more needs to be done to preserve Afghan heritage

Kufi script on the side of the Friday Mosque.

The glass maker of Herat. His shop is 50 meters to the left if you are facing this kiln. He has been around for 40 years or so and can easily tell you about better days when bus load of tourists come to see him. He is specially fond of the French.

An ancient part of the Friday Mosque

A carving in stone on the tomb of Sultan Hussain Baeqra, one of the last kings of the Timurid Dynasty in Herat. The carving is simply superb. Locals eat yoghurt from the top of the stone believing it will cure some diseases.

Khoja Ghaltan. locals believe if you make a wish with pure heart and roll down the slope, your wish will be granted if you roll straight to the wall. needless to say few actually reach the opposite wall

Tomb of Amir Ali Shir Nawaii, grand wazir of Sultan Hussain Baieqra and an Uzbek Poet.

An old hallway or daalaan in Herat
