Afghan Communicator

Programs

Afghan Communicator organizes a number of projects annually, some of which are reoccuring but some are unique to their area and time. The projects and events differ in size and scope, but they all fulfill our mission of education, youth leadership, advocacy, community & professional development, art & culture.

PROGRAMS

Afghan Heritage Day

This outdoor cultural picnic is held annually in New York. It is a cultural celebration attended by thousands of Afghans from all over the US and parts of Canada. Participating in this grand event are community leaders, elected and state officials, celebrities, non-profit organizations as well as vendors to add flavor to these festivities.

Afghan Art & Film

Since 2004 Afghan Communicator has been developing major interest in Afghan art. Aiming to revive Afghan film, arts & crafts and marketing it abroad, AC introduces Afghan arts & handcraft as well as prominent artists in various cities in North America and Europe. By building local capacity, centralizing art in one source, producing research and data on Afghan art and connecting artists from East and West, AC hopes to revive Afghan art tradition. Our efforts also include taking artists to major art exhibitions, selling their work at various events and diversifying and broadening the use of arts in Afghanistan. For more information see our art page here.

Community Bulletin

This bi-monthly, English/Dari newsletter contains information about the community and benefits for the Afghan community. In addition to its circulation in the Afghan community, this publication is also read by many elected officials, non-profits, academic institutions, businesses and foreign embassies. Since 2006, we are offering free space to small non-profits, individuals and other groups who wish to advertise their charitable work but lack the sufficient funds to produce their own publication.

Inter Afghan Young Professionals Summit (IAYPS)

Created by Afghan Communicator in 1999, this event is an annual gathering of active, young, Afghan professionals to discuss issues concerning the Afghan community. Since 1997, it has been held in New York, California, Virginia and Toronto. In 2003, AC created the Most Active Young Afghan Award at the Summit, intended to encouraging leadership and participation in the community.

Afghan Professional Nights

In order to encourage young Afghan professionals of NY tri-state area to network, Afghan Communicator organizes regular outings to local cultural events, which include anything from museum visits and film screenings, to music concerts, poetry readings, outdoor activities and fashion shows. Interested individuals can subscribe to the free server to be informed of events. Blank email to <NYAreaAfghans-subscribe@yahoo groups.com>. AC sends out event notices regularly and welcomes ideas for venues/activities.

Community Development

Afghan Communicator collaborates with other service-based organizations in order to offer the Afghan community needed services. These services include voter registration, immigration consultation translation services, health benefits, real estate consulting, peer and family counseling, etc. We also work with the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington DC to bridge the communication gap in the Afghan community.

Library Project (Know-Books)

Firmly believing that education is the key to tolerance and mutual understanding, AC initiated the Know-Book Project in 2002, aiming to provide local NY libraries with objective materials on Afghanistan and Islam. Afghan Communicator targets public libraries to help them build their collection of books, magazines, video and audio. Authors or publishers who wish to donate their books in exchange for a review in our publications should contact our office for more information.

Conferences

Afghan Communicator participates and organizes conferences, panels, teach ins, town hall meetings and film screenings throughout the year, locally, nationally or internationally. We welcome speaking engagement requests in your neighborhood, or institution. References of prior speaking engagements in this field are available.

Afghan Events List

To organize relevant information on the community, Afghan Communicator compiles a comprehensive weekly events list packed with information on upcoming events, book releases, job postings, scholarships, grants and other announcements concerning the Afghan community. The list is emailed to over 10,000 subscribers in our list. This is not a discussion or news list. Subscribers only get one email per week from AC about jobs and events.
