Afghan Art Project Report
In May 2007 Afghan Communicator, with support from Christensen Fund, organized a trip of two artists to Afghanistan in order to conduct workshops in art. Aside from teaching necessary skills, the artists were given tools to practice their new learned skills.
Mr. Yar Mohammad Taraky, an accomplished Afghan artist residing in Canada, and Ms. Gazelle Samizai a new Afghan artist from the US made the journey to Kabul and Herat. They conducted workshops in art techniques, mating and framing, marketing and other needed fields.
Over 200 students and teachers benefited from these workshops in Faculty of Fine Arts in Kabul and Herat Universities, Center for Visual Art in Heart, Behzad School in Herat, Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Kabul, and Center for Contemporary Art Afghanistan in Kabul.
Thanks to some generous support from afghans for Afghans, eight families donated digital cameras, video cameras, tripods, and laptops which we donated to Herat University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Center for Visual Arts of Herat and Turquoise Mountain Foundation in Kabul.
Art of Afghanistan is a forgotten field that gets lost among the tons of issues facing Afghanistan everyday. Too few actually realize the danger of losing the crafts of Afghanistan and the masters that teach these skills. It is often forgotten that this art was passed down from father to son or from master to apprentice, in a continuous chain going back hundreds of years, if not thousands. A break in the chain can mean the end of centuries of our collective wisdom and knowledge.
Afghan Communicator is an art and culture organization that aims to revive the arts of Afghanistan, help it grow and support artists. We are the only non-profit organization that promotes Afghan art and artists. Our website both has some artists we work with and a shop section from which you can buy art. It is through collective effort of everyone that we can make greater impact. Please don’t forget the art and artists of Afghanistan everywhere.
