Message Linguist/Translator Opportunity with SOSi was posted by Frank McDuffie, on 12/3/2009 12:23:46 PM.

Salam,

SOSi was recently awarded a multi-year linguist contract with a requirement for personnel to work full-time in an area designated by the U.S. Government as an Imminent Danger and Hostile Fire Zone. We have a requirement to provide a large number of linguists in Iraq and in Afghanistan. All personnel on this effort are required to be US citizens who will be screened by the government and have the ability to obtain/maintain an INTERIM-SECRET. Personnel must also be willing to submit to a CI scope polygraph examination. Both the clearance and the polygraph are non-negotiable and must be completed before personnel deploy.

The following languages and skills are required:

Afghanistan - Dari, Persian-Farsi, Pashto (Kandahari, Kabuli and Waziri dialects), and Urdu.

Language Testing Requirements – To be selected for this effort, personnel must score a minimum of 4/4/4 (Listening, Speaking, Reading) as measured by the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) 5 point scale, however, native proficiency in the target language is preferred. Minimum scoring levels may be waived by the government on a case-by-case basis, but this exception will be rare. Personnel must have the ability to write and speak in clear and concise grammar and pronunciation in the target language as well as English. Personnel should also have the following skills in the native language:

• Consecutive, accurate translations and summarizations of material
• Read and translate handwritten material
• Scan and process material for critical and essential elements of information
• Understand speech in a standard dialect, inferences and emotional overtones, and rarely need to ask for paraphrasing or explanation
• Write effectively in most formal and informal exchanges
• Understand all styles/forms of speech and have a strong sensitivity to sociolinguistic and cultural references
• Tailor language to fit the audience to include the ability to counsel, persuade and negotiate in remote or challenging environments and represent a point of view
• Ability to deal unobtrusively with the local populace
• Familiarity with and ability to conduct oneself in accordance with the local culture and customs;
• Ability to function during a level of heightened state of threat, during extended periods of high pressure and stress;
• Ability to function as an integral member of a team of highly trained professionals responsible for the safety and security of US Forces personnel and resources.

Other Requirements - Personnel working on this effort should anticipate spending varying amounts of time outside of areas controlled by military installations. Personnel are required to demonstrate personal, first-hand knowledge of the specific geographic areas/cities/towns/provinces in which they will work and must be able to successfully navigate/escort these locations without the use of maps or GPS devices. Personnel chosen for this effort will be Independent Consultants (ICs) and not employees of SOSi. ICs must be willing to submit to various pre-deployment medical screenings and be of sufficient physical health as to endure at least 320 out of 365 days deployed to potentially hostile and austere locations where they will be required to work (on average) 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. Personnel shall be physically capable and in good health without chronic medical conditions which require frequent monitoring/contact with medical professionals and must meet US military standards for deployment to the U.S. CENTCOM Theater of Operations. Personnel will also be subject to various pre-deployment screenings at the customer’s processing center in Maryland and other training at various locations around the US prior to deployment.
